As the world increasingly prioritizes environmental protection, sustainability has become a key issue in the automotive industry. Major brands are investing in eco-friendly materials and technologies to reduce carbon emissions and create a greener future. However, the transition for car manufacturers is not without challenges, as they navigate between the wave of electrification and real market demands. BMW and Mercedes-Benz, representing luxury car brands, are exploring different approaches to achieving sustainability.

In recent years, automakers have gradually increased the use of recycled materials to minimize their environmental impact. For instance, Audi has incorporated 27% recycled plastics, including polycarbonate and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), into the grilles of its new A3 Sportback and A3 Sedan models. Mercedes-Benz has gone a step further with its Vision EQXX concept car, where the floor and door trims are made entirely of 100% recycled polyester fabric. These initiatives not only reduce plastic waste pollution but also improve resource efficiency.

BMW has introduced an even more forward-thinking eco-friendly vision. In 2021, the company unveiled the 'i Vision Circular' concept car, where "Circular" signifies that the entire vehicle is made of 100% recyclable materials. The interior features digital 3D printing technology, a steering wheel made from recycled wood powder, and velvet-like fabric seats that enhance both sustainability and comfort. Currently, BMW’s vehicles are composed of approximately 30% recycled materials, with plans to increase this proportion to 50% in the future.

Beyond innovations in sustainable materials, electrification remains a central focus in the automotive industry. In 2021, Mercedes-Benz announced its goal to transition into an all-electric luxury brand by 2030. However, as global EV market growth slowed after 2022, the company faced challenges in its electrification strategy. Despite a 61.3% increase in EQ-series electric vehicle sales in 2023, the actual sales volume was only around 240,000 units—falling short of expectations. Meanwhile, sales of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models declined by 12.5%. Confronted with market realities, Mercedes-Benz adjusted its strategy, deciding to continue offering internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles beyond 2030 to cater to demand in markets such as North America, Japan, Southeast Asia, and South America.

To address the high costs of EV production, Mercedes-Benz is set to launch the new MMA platform in 2024. This platform supports both pure electric and internal combustion engine powertrains and aims to reduce production costs by 30%. The first model built on the MMA platform, the third-generation CLA, is expected to hit the market soon. This move highlights Mercedes-Benz’s flexible approach to electrification.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have adopted different strategies in their pursuit of sustainability and electrification. BMW is focusing on material innovation and promoting a circular economy in vehicle manufacturing, gradually increasing the use of recycled materials. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is adjusting its electrification transition by balancing market demand and production costs. In the short term, Mercedes-Benz’s approach appears more pragmatic, ensuring competitiveness while the market slowly adapts to fully electric vehicles. On the other hand, BMW’s commitment to recyclable materials may position it as a long-term leader in environmental sustainability.

Looking ahead, the path to sustainability in the automotive industry remains challenging. Should automakers forge ahead toward a fully electric era, or should they adopt a more flexible approach, balancing electrification with market realities? The choices made by BMW and Mercedes-Benz may well serve as a guiding trend for the entire industry.
