In January 2025, the EU electric vehicle (EV) market kicked off the year on a strong note. However, beneath this prosperity, market trends are undergoing subtle shifts. The latest data reveals that the market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the EU rose from 10.9% in the same period of 2024 to 15%, with sales increasing by 34% year-over-year to 124,000 units. Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands were the main drivers of this growth, with Germany’s BEV sales surging by 53.5%, Belgium’s by 37.2%, and the Netherlands’ by 28.2%. This rebound is attributed to the fading low-base effect caused by Germany’s subsidy removal in early 2024, as well as automakers ramping up deliveries to meet 2025 carbon emission targets in advance.

However, compared to the growth of BEVs, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have performed even more strongly, capturing a market share of 34.9%. In particular, HEV sales in France soared by 52.2%, highlighting consumer preference for transitional technologies. In contrast, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a significant decline due to policy adjustments.

In the fierce global automotive market, Toyota has achieved remarkable success through its long-term focus on hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Data from the third quarter of the 2024 fiscal year (April 2024 to March 2025) shows that HEVs accounted for 42.4% of Toyota’s global new car sales, up 9 percentage points from the previous year. This data underscores Toyota’s strong presence and leadership in the HEV market.

In the European market, there has been a consistent demand for environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles, aligning perfectly with Toyota’s HEV technology. Its excellent fuel economy and lower emissions have made it a preferred choice among European consumers. In Japan, HEVs hold an even more dominant market share of 59.4%, driven by strong domestic brand loyalty and Toyota’s continued investment in technological innovation.

The Driving Forces Behind HEV Growth

One key factor behind the rise in HEV sales is the lagging development of charging infrastructure. In many regions, especially in developing countries and remote areas, the limited availability of charging stations remains a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Since HEVs do not rely on external charging, instead generating electricity through the engine and regenerative braking, they offer superior convenience in daily use.

Additionally, extreme weather conditions can significantly impact the range and charging efficiency of electric vehicles. In contrast, HEVs, equipped with internal combustion engines, can operate reliably even in harsh environments such as extreme cold or deserts, making them a more practical choice for consumers in these regions.

Among global markets, China has seen the most significant increase in HEV sales, rising by 14 percentage points year-over-year. As the world’s largest automotive market, China has been actively promoting new energy vehicles, with growing consumer awareness of environmental protection. The top-selling HEVs in China include the Camry, Sienna, and Granvia, with Toyota models dominating the top ten rankings, further solidifying the brand’s stronghold in the market.

In the United States, the proportion of HEV sales has also risen by 12.2 percentage points year-over-year, maintaining steady growth. While EV sales are also increasing, consumer concerns over fully electric vehicles persist, particularly regarding range anxiety during long-distance travel. As a result, HEVs have emerged as a more balanced solution that aligns with American market preferences.

As the global new energy vehicle market continues to evolve, HEVs are seizing new growth opportunities due to their practicality and adaptability. Although the electric vehicle market remains on an expansion trajectory, infrastructure development and shifts in consumer habits will take time. In the meantime, HEVs have positioned themselves as the ideal transitional solution in the current automotive landscape.
