
As the global automotive industry accelerates its transition to new energy, BYD is growing at an unprecedented pace to become a key player in the global market. In 2024, BYD ranked fifth among global automakers with worldwide sales of 4.27 million vehicles, climbing four positions from the previous year. Its exports increased by 71.8% year-over-year. Against this backdrop, BYD is accelerating its technological advancements, planning to launch more advanced intelligent driving technology in 2025 and aiming for a more significant presence in the global market.
For its 2025 models, BYD plans to equip at least 60% of its vehicles with the Highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) system and further promote the adoption of advanced intelligent driving technology in vehicles priced between 100,000 and 150,000 RMB (approximately $13,900 to $20,800). This move could have a profound impact on the market landscape, making competing models without Highway NOA less competitive.
To achieve this goal, BYD has partnered with Horizon Robotics and NVIDIA. More than 20 models will feature intelligent driving systems based on Horizon’s Journey 6 series and NVIDIA’s OrinN (80T). Additionally, BYD has recently increased its development focus on Horizon’s Journey 6M (128T), preparing for higher computing power in its intelligent driving systems.
BYD also plans to equip all of its 2025 models with three cameras on the rearview mirrors for intelligent driving perception. This move signifies that intelligent driving will become mainstream, putting vehicles without such features under greater market pressure.
As intelligent driving systems demand increasingly powerful computing chips, EVs provide the ideal platform for this technology due to their electronic architecture and stable power supply. BYD’s Blade Battery, with its unique lithium iron phosphate (LFP) structure, ensures safety and stability while significantly increasing energy density. This technology has not only reshaped the new energy market landscape but also provides a more reliable power source for intelligent driving systems.
Although the energy density of the Blade Battery remains lower than that of ternary lithium batteries, it offers clear advantages in safety, stability, and cost control. While BYD primarily uses Blade Batteries for its own models, growing market acceptance has led more mainstream automakers to adopt this technology.
BYD’s globalization strategy is not merely about exporting production capacity but involves a systemic transformation encompassing technology, branding, and industry standards. To enhance its global market competitiveness, BYD is expanding its overseas R&D centers and strengthening its technological innovation capabilities to address the fierce competition in intelligent driving, battery technology, and the new energy vehicle sector.
Although BYD’s intelligent driving technology is currently in the second tier, lagging behind top-tier competitors, its large-scale production capacity and fully integrated industrial chain provide it with a unique competitive edge. If BYD can accelerate the market penetration of high-level intelligent driving features, its position in the global new energy vehicle market will be further solidified.
BYD’s 2025 strategy not only focuses on breakthroughs in intelligent driving technology but also demonstrates an ambitious plan for global market expansion. Through the widespread adoption of Highway NOA, the promotion of Blade Battery technology, and the enhancement of overseas R&D capabilities, BYD is steadily advancing toward a leadership position in the global new energy vehicle market. As new energy technologies continue to evolve, BYD’s strategic initiatives could further drive the automotive industry toward greater intelligence and sustainability.
